Time trial racing: you, your ghost and the clock

A time trial is the purest race there is: one car, one circuit, one number. Every lap you finish becomes something to beat, and the game keeps it on track beside you as a ghost.

Two ways to race the clock

Practice against your ghost. The time trial puts you on track with the ghost of your own best run and nothing else. It never counts, so it is the place to learn a circuit; a faster lap still becomes your new ghost.

Ranked races. Live rivals lines you up on a full grid of recorded laps from other players and seeded drivers. Every lap you finish is checked on the server and, if it is valid, ranked on that circuit’s leaderboard.

Three stars on every circuit

Each circuit grades a finish in stars: one for the bronze time, two for the gold time, and the third for matching the author’s lap, the benchmark set on that circuit. Your stars add up across every circuit, so there is always a next one to chase. During a race the pace line shows whether you are ahead of the time for your next star.

Leaderboards and longer races

Every circuit has an all-time top ten and a rolling top ten for the last 24 hours. On the tracks page you can also choose a longer race of three or five laps: it keeps its own personal best and ghost and never reaches the leaderboards.
